One of the most recent examples of our commitment to innovation is Bordify. The project camed from the need to explore new frontiers in the world of blockchain technology. Specifically, we dug deep into the area of Bitcoin Ordinals.
Through this project, we have demonstrated not only our commitment to research and innovation, but also our willingness to share knowledge with the technology community.
Before we dive into the details of the project, let’s clarify what Bitcoin Ordinals are.
TL;DR: What are Bitcoin Ordinals?
Bitcoin Ordinals are a way to create unique digital assets on the Bitcoin blockchain. They work by assigning a unique serial number to each satoshi (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) and allowing additional data to be inscribed. These can be both images and text, among other things.
This process allows the creation of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that benefit from the security and decentralization of the Bitcoin blockchain. Unlike other NFTs systems, Ordinals do not require the creation of a separate token. This makes them an innovative and straightforward option for registering digital property.
Bordify’s origin
The Bordify project was born as a direct response to an emerging trend in the world of Bitcoin Ordinals. Marcos Fernández, one of the technical leaders involved in the project, shares how the idea came about.
“At ElenPAY, we noticed a trend related to Bitcoin Ordinals on social media and decided to investigate further. We found a niche where we could launch a project and engage with the community,” highlights Marcos Fernández, Software Engineer at Clovr Labs.
This spirit of observation and innovation is what allowed Clovr Labs to dive fully into an uncharted field. On her part, Tamara González, who also played a crucial role in the development of Bordify, emphasizes that this decision wasn’t made just because it was trendy, but because it aligns with the company’s philosophy.
The team saw in Ordinals a unique opportunity to learn and grow in an emerging area.
The development process: Innovation and challenges
Developing Bordify challenged the team with a steep learning curve and the need to coordinate effectively in a remote work environment. “The biggest challenge was the speed at which we had to learn and adapt to such an innovative concept,” mentions Tamara.
Team communication was key to overcoming this challenge. As Marcos adds: “Technically, it was a time when we had to research and learn very quickly.“
One of the major takeaways from this project was the adoption of new work methodologies. According to Tamara, “The project gave us the opportunity to experiment with faster and more solution-oriented methodologies, prioritizing smooth communication to prevent delays and obstacles.” This approach improved the team’s efficiency and left a significant mark on how Clovr Labs approaches innovation in the future.
The Bordify team didn’t just experiment; they also innovated throughout the process. As Marcos explains, “We had to modify the core of the ordinals software to make it technically possible to create them.” These kinds of technical adjustments were essential for the project to continue advancing at a rapid pace.
Thanks to their creative and efficient approach to solving technical challenges, Marcos and Tamara were able to push the project forward. In doing so, they reinforced Clovr Labs’ commitment to continuous innovation.
The result: A project shared with the community
After a week and a half of intense work, Bordify was successfully completed. The team achieved their main objectives: learning, experimenting, and creating a functional software in record time. However, the most exciting aspect of this project wasn’t just its development, but the decision to make it open-source.
As Tamara explains, “Our goal is to make this emerging technology more accessible and allow the community to benefit from our advancements.” This decision reinforces Clovr Labs’ reputation as a company committed to collaboration and the growth of the blockchain ecosystem. Additionally, it provides the community with a valuable tool to continue exploring this emerging technology.
A legacy of innovation
Bordify leaves a significant legacy within Clovr Labs and the tech community. The project allowed for experimentation and learning, while also offering valuable lessons about efficiency on the Bitcoin blockchain.
As Jose AP, Lead Lightning Engineer at Clovr Labs, explains: “Ordinals were pushed out by the market because Bitcoin’s block space is limited. This makes it very expensive to introduce data into it.” This conclusion highlights how inefficient mechanisms tend to be replaced by more agile and efficient solutions, like the new Taproot Assets protocols.
Although Bordify has since been deprecated, the project reaffirmed Clovr Labs’ commitment to innovation and open collaboration. The lessons learned through Bordify have informed our focus on more scalable and efficient blockchain solutions. It showcased the company’s ability to adapt to technological advances and maintain its position at the forefront of the blockchain ecosystem.
